Righteousness of this beatitude is not imputed righteousness. That is forensic and legal. Jesus is not talking about hungering and thirsting for a justification by faith. (That is already assumed in the poor in spirit.) neither is he talking about moral justice. He is also not talking about morality or outward righteousness.

Blessed are the merciful--2 kinds of mercy. Affectionate mercy and aggressive mercy. You go out of your way and overrule your feelings. You 'get right into their situation' - Good Samaritan.

True Godliness is being like God Himself:Merciful. Blessed are the merciful presents is with the first major test in the Beattitudes. The previous verse brings us to a crossroads --Are we truly hungering and thirsting after righteousness? Jesus then tells us that there is a way to find out. The filling is more likely to be an unconscious, unseen and unappreciated righteousness that results in a never-ending pursuit of God. If we have an appetite like that - to please God- we will be filled.

Paradox on this beatitude--it follows that we will not know that we are filled. We get him hurt and thirstiest. Results in further conviction of sin. It is being changed from glory to glory by His Spirit.

God did not create this longing for nothing. He did not give us this hunger to mock us. He put that desire there. God is gracious to give the soul what it longs for. Jesus does not say what we will be filled with. He doesn't say how we will be filled. Or where it will happen. Or when it will come. But we can assume that we will be filled with the righteousness we are hungry for. What we are hungry for, we are filled.

What kept the Pharisee blind to Jesus blind to Jesus' glory was their insatiable need for another's approval. Jesus blesses those who are hungry for a righteousness that will be unappreciated in this life.

The righteousness is not imputed righteousness but an implanted righteousness. It is an internal righteousness (James 1:21). Once this righteousness has been implanted, the outward will follow. When you see what you lack, it makes you yearn for a righteousness that exceeds that of the Moral Law. It is an unseen righteousness. There is an absence of smugness. arrogance, and haughtiness.
