I'm about halfway through this book, and I've finally figured out what it is that bugs me about this book. It's obvious that Garry Willis is a keen historian and lover of Shakespeare and Verdi--but Musicologist, he is not. He doesn't have that power of description that puts you in the music. I might finish it, but all that's left is Falstaff, not my fave.
