'Her life depended on him, & dependence was something she related to very well. All of her life she'd depended upon someone else, first her parents & then later Henri & his family. She'd been raised to be dependent, though she longed to be free & do whatever she liked. But defying the barbarian Saxon at such a time as this would be very unwise.'
