I loved this book. It is sad and funny and full and loving. Leisl is a young girl fostered by a working class family on the edge of Munich in 1938. After a ghastly train journey, during which her brother dies, her mother leaves her there. Th book is about what happens to her in the war and how she becomes a book theif and loses so much that she loves except words.
