We'll just pretend leaving that thing unguarded on anyone shelf isn't horribly stupid, but at least Barl covered they're idiot asses. So now he has to use Gar somehow to bring the wall down. It be handy if Dat's prophecy could warn her about shit like this.

Inside is all kinds of nasty shit, and some useful stuff. He of course immediately uses the spell to see past the wall and finds Morg, the ancient enemy. He flees back, but Morg follows him and takes over his body. Just a piece of Morg and he can be killed now (just this piece probably) so he has to be careful. He tries to take over the weather magic from the orb, but Barl warded it against him.

They make up. When they get to the city, surprise, King is alive. Dumbass. Dat and Matt are glad he's back, but then Asher gets a fever and won't wake up. Probably his magic kicking in. While he's out they find a magic locked library. Borne the master magician is after Barl's spells and fuck what the King says about danger. He finds her diary because she doesn't protect it otherwise, of course.

Find his brothers and shock- their father is dead. 8 months ago. He lost it over Asher going, went out into a storm and got killed. Seems odd since he didn't seem to give a shit until he was gone, but eh. His brother beat him and banish him from the coast. Gar figures the King is dead, wild storms happened twice before when the monarch lost it in death. So they head back to the city.

They get to his home, do the parade and it goes fine. Back at the palace the king decides to do some weather work despite being told not too and gets a fever a raves and starts tearing the place up magically. Asher and Gar go out on a boat and the magic storm hits tearing the town up and knocking Gar into the ocean. Asher saves him. Asher goes to check on his family.

So the boy admits his guilt. They cut his had off right there to get it over with. Gar thinks it's a stupid law. Asher falls for Dat during the year. Wins the kings tournament somehow. Asks her to leave with him, she says no. King gets ill, Weather Working wears on you it seems, though since they've been doing this for 600 years you'd think everyone would know that. Fane is a bitch.

Spate gets to town, Gar sends Asher to make sure he's not being ruffed up. Dat has a vision of the end of the world. Dat decides to kill Spate before he can talk, gets Asher to get her in. But the poison food is ruined, so so much for that. Asher talks down to Olken wanting to lynch Spate. Gar is translating 400 year old texts. Wants Asher at the execution. Asher has mentioned his Da etc too much. He's dead I bet.

Does this magic involve shouting? Killing animals? What? Idiot. So Spake, the idiot, is shipped to the city to be executed. The princes line is called the Usurper in Dat's prophecy. This is all being setup as the Olken are some poor oppressed people, but this system has been working fine for 600 years. And it's going to be a problem for Ahsher to be a mage if he's not supposed to do magic.

Asher goes about his stable duties fine, then Gar says come with to watch a trial. Asher sides against the greedy asshole, Gar approves. Gar's secretary does not like Asher. Of course. Then it's off to a privy meeting. Head nemesis Jarralt doesn't like Asher either. Dat gets a message that someone broke the first law- Olken do not do magic or the die. How the hell do you get caught doing that?

Asher gets 25 whatever a week, doesn't seem to realize the city is probably more expensive than home. Buts heads with Matt, they bond over Dat being a pain in the ass. Dat and Matt are part of the circle and the End Times are here.
