This book is a memorare that is informational. It is an arrangement of short stories where Greg Boyle, the author and narrator, discribes how he teaches lessons, what the lessons are, and where he has seen the lessons take place in the gang members life. After every short story, there is almost always a brief reflection discribing the main lesson/theme of that event.

A minor character is Willy, a former drug addict, who was relapsing again. Willy was on the side of the road when Greg found him and picked him up. Willy explained to Greg how he felt that he wasn’t being a “son” to anyone. Greg claimed he was Willy’s father and that made Willy cry. Greg used this to start “Homeboys” because he wanted all the members to feel the love and be a son to a parent that they didn’t have.
