The purpose of the story is to see how people are racist, the author shows us this by when the boy go shot for having a hairbrush in his hand. Hailey Stars best friend says that in a black persons hand a hairbrush is considered a weapon . Star is a good influencer because she stands up for black people and shows to everyone that people need to stop being racist.

The tone of the book is very sympathetic, hopeful, serious , and depressing. It’s very sad how things like this is happen still in some places. It’s a very serious topic about racism. The book makes you feel very depressing because it’s a very touchy subject . It’s also hopeful because hopefully this will all come to an end
