The mother is taking over the father also. Now the father can't save David. The fathers promise to David was that he was going to run away with him but the mother brainwashed the father and made him start to hate David

As I'm reading into the book he usually gets in trouble when somebody does something good for him but when somebody is rude to him or beats him up , the mother laughs and congratulates him for getting beat up.

The pattern I've noticed is that David's mother kept making up stories saying that he is a bad boy. She first wrote a fake letter from Santa and said he was a bad boy so he couldn't get a Christmas present. The mother then blamed the brother for making to much noise and made him eat crap out of a spoiled diaper.

This book is so touching. A pattern that I've noticed is the only time he David gets abused is when his mother drinks, his father isn't home, and when his mother is angry. She abuses him to express her feelings.
