Laila ends up doing everything that Mammy is supposed to be doing. All mammy talks to her about is stories about her brothers. After Tariq, Babi, and Laila go on a trip. They go see the huge Buddha’s, Babi explains how he is blessed to have her. Sometime pases and so they sign a treaty that no soviets will be in Afghanistan. Babi is really happy but Mammy is not happy until the mujahideen hold victory in Kabul.

The military people come in to give news to Babi and Mammy about Ahmad and Noor. They ending up being killed and they are doing a funeral. Mammy is absolutely torn and she hates Babi. Laila is not that hurt because she wasn’t close to them, she then says that her brother is alive which is Tariq.

So far in the book, Laila mom does not seem to care about her a lot. She is always by herself at home, the only one she is close to is Babi. Khadim bothers her and once Tariq comes back he ends up beating him up for treating Laila like that. Laila notices how she never got to know her brothers because they left to war.

Mariam ends up getting pregnant by Rasheed.She loses the baby because she had problems.Mariam becomes envious of other families.Rasheed starts to become very abusive to Mariam. Mariam makes rice and Rasheed judges her food, he goes outside and gets rocks. He comes in and shoved them into Mariam mouth telling her that her rice taste like that. He stated how that is how his life has been with him which is “nothing”.

Her mom ends up hanging herself up because she ran away to go see her dad. Her dad denied her and she felt sad afterwards. Jahlil takes her in and he wants her to get married to a 45 year old man. He is basically kicking his own daughter out of his house, he says he wants her to create a family.
