I think it's impressive that Bear and Monette build tension with everyday trials and conflicts, not epic storms and dark shadows. There's a quiet treat growing in the background and its made all the more threatening by the fact that we're learning to love the mundane lies of the wolves and their brothers. THAT is how you do a slow burn, right there.

I had a hard time remembering all of the norse-ish names, but Bear and Monette do a good job of organically recapping Companion to Wolves in the first couple chapters.
