I'm not sure how I feel about the framework story yet - it may or it may not hold up. However, the execution is great. The play on the development of science, the play on civilisations and historical characters, all (science, characters, and civilisations alike) cast entirely into fiction is a lot of fun.

This is truly science fiction, not technology fiction - at least in the delivery of the story.
