This is a first-rate introduction to the history of ideas in the United States. Ratner-Rosenhagen hits all the major players and deep currents. There are her favorites (Rorty, Bourne, James, Addams, Emerson, etc.), and German and German-American influences are not neglected. But I found Ratner-Rosenhagen's account compelling and true in relation to our shared community of reference (i.e., intellectual historians).
