Getting a tad more interesting, maybe this will be the book to look out for after all. There's always been reasons why I love Hawthorne. Poor, poor Phoebe! Such an innocent girl in the midst of chaos.

NOW I remember why Hawthorne is one of my favorite authors. No one writes a character like he does. I feel complete sympathy for Clifford's desolation and want nothing but to console him.

This book has indeed gotten more interesting with the inclusion of Phoebe. She is a breath of fresh air. To mix with her up with the likes of Holgate MAY have been genius.

This story is starting to move along but not at an interesting pace.
The introduction of a new character, Phoebe, hopefully brings about more of a reason for me to want to read this book.

'All this time, however, we are loitering faintheartedly on the threshold of our story.' The book could not have put its own drawback any more eloquently: the first part of this book tends to repeat everything that it says at least five times over. This makes the story VERY repetitive and hard to get into. You feel tired after walking the same step five time over.
However, Hepzibah has promise.
