After the fight with Assef, Amir said that he felt "healed". I was surprised to hear him say that. His body was very broken and he was beaten almost to death. I think what Amir meant when he said he felt healed even after being beaten, was that he felt like he deserved to be beaten. During this fight, he mentions the time he threw fruit at Hassan. I think he felt he deserved to be hurt after what he did to Hassan.

continued... This phrase was something Hassan said to Amir when they were younger. I think that Hosseini was connecting that event with this one even though they were years apart. Overall, one of my favorite novels that I have read.

I absolutely loved this novel. Hosseini writes in a way that draws me to the story, connecting with me every character. Through death, love and the tragic story of one boy's childhood, I was absorbed into the novel. I thought it was symbolic in that the story ended with Amir kite running with Sohrab. To me, this represented the final healing of Amir's mind and soul. He states, "For you a thousand times over." Cont...

When Amir asks Sohrab to come to America, Sohrab at first does not respond. I feel like Sohrab is scared to leave his home because it is all he knows. He would be leaving the memory of his father behind, all the while living somewhere completely different. I also wonder how Soraya is going to respond. Will she be happy to have a child? Will she be angry at Amir for lying? I predict she will be very happy to have him.

... CONTINUED... brother must really affect him mentally. Also, after finding out that Hassan is dead, I would not be surprised if Amir killed himself because of his mental state. Learning that Hassan left the world so young, and never getting to repay him for what he did years and years ago. Overall, the story has really picked up and I am left wanting to read more of the novel. My favorite book of the year.

As I have finished the second third of this book, I have become very engulfed by the story and I have started to feel connected the characters. Amir goes back to his home in the middle east and suddenly has emotionally heavy info brought upon him. He finds out that he is half brothers with Hassan and to me this created an even more intense situation between him and Hassan. Knowing that he stood by and watched his...

As I predicted, Amir has started to make detailed comments about Soraya's health. He describes her like the two of them are growing apart, and that she looks a bit older than what she used to look like. I think this helps support my hypothesis that maybe Soraya may die soon, just like Amir's mother did. I am also interested in seeing how 9/11 plays a role in the story as we reach that point in time.

CONTINUED... of like Amir taking his father's spirit and encasing it within himself. If this is, in fact, true, I think Amir may have a similar life to his father. For example, his new wife fiancé may die. Or he may develop "brain cancer" just like his father did because of his mental struggle about what he did to Hassan. I am very interested to see the outcome of Amir's fathers passing and how it affects Amir.

As I have reached this point in the novel, I have become engulfed in the story. Baba, Amir's father is dying of cancer and I have suddenly noticed a possible foreshadow from the author. Hosseini inputs a large amount of detail about how Amir's is so very different from his father, especially growing up. I am predicting that when Amir's father dies, Amir will sort of inherit some of his father's characteristics. Kind

This is my fourth update about this book so far which shows how interested I am in it. I wanted to point out how Hassan tries and tries to "rekindle" his relationship with Amir. I thought it was interesting to see that Amir shut Hassan out when Hassan tried to be friends again. I think this shows that Amir is struggling mentally with what he did to Hassan. He is similar to Gene from A Separate Peace in this way.

The first third of this book has been very interesting and captivating to read. As Hassan and Amir grow farther apart, Hassan's physical health seems to weaken. For example, Amir says that " Hassan looked tired too--- he'd lost weight and gray circles had formed under his puffed up eyes." (Knowles, 86). I am interested to see if Hassan becomes ill or dies because of similar reasons as Finny in A Separate Peace.
