I am VERY impressed by Westerfield's ability to describe the mechanics of the steampunk devices in such clear detail. Unlike the lumbering metal behemoths that stalk the battlefields in this book, Westerfield's prose never feels clunky! :)

At first I wasn't sure which was cooler...the steam-powered metal juggernauts on the Clankers side, or the bizarre genetically-altered beasties on the Darwinists side. But now with the introduction of talking "message lizards" (and SNARKY message lizards, at that), it's beasties for the win!!! :)
