What a wonderful thing, to read about Murray's re-connection with the sense of smell while I am sitting next to an open window, enjoying the odors of spring, that rush of life, as I read. I'm so glad I waited for winter to pass to read this book! It is inspiring. I took a hike after work Friday, after not having done so all winter long. It feels good to be "back in" nature again.

Murray's battle with encroaching winter is epic, or at least it consumes all of his attention. It's almost like nature is grabbing him by the collar and declaring "I am here! Look into my eyes when I'm talking to you!" But that personification (mine, not his) is all human vanity - or is it? Do have more influence than we think? Or far less?

Okay, that last para on page 160 and the following para have clinched it. I know how this review will go now.

When I think about how many ways I may review this book, the mind boggles. I may focus on the sense of smell, temperature on the skin, wind, and my body in space as a starting point. Maybe.

And this is the part where I will provide a link to Jethro Tull's beautiful, somber song "Heavy Horses".

The second full paragraph on page 105 should be a walker's mantra, a hiker's statement of achievement (and shall be quoted in full in my review).

The two full paragraphs on responsiveness to light are emblamatic of the connection I seek and when I am locked in with nature like that, I really am the most satisfied with life. It reminds me of my years working at the canoe shop in some ways, commuting to work on the water.

Butterflies. I forget all about butterflies in winter. I need more butterflies and I need them now!

"The weather ruled all . . ." - Being a city-dweller now for some years (right on the wild edge of a major city), I do miss that connection, or at least a fulness of it, that one feels when one lives in the landscape. Some of this has to do with not having the time to wander like I did as a child, to feel the land in you.

Writers interested in giving a realist bent to post-apocalyptic fiction should read this chapter about Murray's war against the rats. There is grist for the mill here. Now I see why giant rats were a thing in Dungeons and Dragons.
