Shadow and Mr. Wednesday are talking about what happened at the house with the three old people and how they both felt about the situation

Shadow played checkers with this old man and they had a bet that if Shadow lost that he would have to get hit on the head with a sledgehammer but if Shadow won the man had to go with him and Wednesday. Shadow ended up losing one and winning one so now the man has to go with them but Shadow has to get hit on the head with a sledgehammer once>

Shadow went to Laura's funeral. After that Mr. Wednesday and Shadow went to a hotel and before he had the chance to sleep Laura's dead figure came to visit him but he was able to physically touch her. After his encounter with her, he had a dream about gods of the world and what happens to them once they get forgotten.

Shadow now works for Mr. Wednsesday and he found out that before she died his wife had cheated on her.

Shadow had missed his flight home so he had to get a new flight that would take him home that same day. When he was on the new plane he met this man that wouldn't give his name so he calls him Mr. Wednesday. Mr. Wednesday then offers Shadow a job that has benefits and will pay him more than any other job he will take because he is an ex-con, now Shadow has to make his decision on if he wants to take it or not.
