"We were very clear about our rules. 'Girls go about with other girls; they're not meant to have gentleman friends'". Funny to say but that thought never struck me in ISOLT. In real life, how would M have looked knocking about with a band of girls, to a very early 1900s observer? It brings to my mind that idea of "Proust's Lesbianism". The girls are 'actually' boys.That wouldn't have raised eyebrows, I reckon.
