Richards mom had a stroke which caused her left side to be paralyzed. Since she wasn't able to take care of Richard or his brother her brothers and sisters came and split up the kids so they can live comfortably. Richard went with his Uncle Clark which he would have chores and when he started his new school he got into a fight to prove that he isn't a punk and could stand up for himself

Richards Aunt was seeing a different man and they had to leave because the man burnt down some lady's house, his mom decided to take him and his brother and move. He moved next to a prostitution house and he didn't know what it was at the time but he wanted to be nosey so he looked through the crack in the door. When his mom found out what kind of house it was they moved to another house that's on the same street.

Richards Wrights uncle had gotten killed by some white folk and instead of grieving his family acted like his uncle didn't exist so the pain would go away faster. Also he was talking to his mother and was trying to understand what war was and why the black men didn't try to beat up the white men even though they had more numbers. This is when his mother told him what a gun was.

Richard is learning about his family's background. He is asking his mother where/who is her Fathers parents and his Grandmothers parents. His mother is telling him and he learned that he is a descendant from slaves and that somewhere in that family tree that there were slavemasters who raped his relatives.

At the beginning of the book, Richard caused a fire in his house which caused it to burn down. A little down the line Richards parents got a divorce and he was forced to go to an orphanage because his mom didn't make enough money to take care of him and his brother. RIght now im at a part of the book where they are going to move into a different house and they took a detour and visited his grandmothers house.
