....Chairman Mao Zedong had other ideas about them, and in the 1950s he demanded that sparrows be targeted as one of 4 national pests, along with rats, mosquitoes and flies. The whole country was mobilised to kill them and hundreds of millions of sparrows were eradicated, but the sparrow played a vital part in eradicating insects, which multiplied as a result, destroying crops." I am now reading about geese. Norah Lofts has a story in one of her books about a goose girl who drove her geese all the way to London! If I remember correctly they dipped the feet of the geese in tar to help them hold up to the long walk!
Here in my little village the number leader goose was hit and killed by a careless driver and so ALL the geese left the area. There used to be around 30 or more Canadian

The second bird discussed is the Blue Tit which I saw in Suffolk and it became a favorite of mine as they are too cute. I never knew before that they would peck a hole in the top of the cream so they could drink it! We had milk, cream and bread delivered when we lived there but the Blue Tits around our house never bothered the cream or milk. One did fly into the house and died as it could not get back out.
