This portrays a fairly even view of Elizabeth which I love, I notice historicals tend to be biased towards her based on the Historians personal preference and it's usually pitched extremely one way or the other in regards to her. Either she's a manipulative (and Incestually concieved is a favorite one) vainglorious sociopathic bitch, or she's a modern woman who is the savior of mankind in her time.

Almost done so far. For all that Elizabeth is portrayed as decisive and firm she's surprisingly wishy washy about some things.

No matter how much dumb shit she did I never cease to feel sorry for Mary I.

When you learn how Puritanical Edward VI (Henry VIII's only living son to inherit the throne), yeesh. Certainly not as diet Catholic as Henry was.

Listening to the Audiobook version read by Clive Chafer, whose voice is pleasant and not dry despite the sometimes "dry" sections. If you're looking for a book that talks endlessly mainly or only on Henry's actions concerning his wives look elsewhere. While they are mentioned, Ackroyd focuses instead mostly on the political and spiritual decisions of Henry VIII. A refreshing change to this historian.
