This is such a good book, all the parallels to real history are at once great and shocking as I came to realize again just how brutal the sino-japanese war was and especially the comfort woman and experimentation references are heartbreaking.

Part 1: complete. It's been sooooooo good so far. Having studied East Asian History and even Philosophy I can see so many references to actual historical events and political climates. The way the author has incorporated all of it in an individual and fantastical story is beautiful. Cannot wait to see what part 2 of the book will bring!

Silvi I'm curious what you'll think about this one. I got it for my brithday and will read it a bit closer to the release date of the sequel. ^^

Marie I actually wrote sth on this update but it didn't save it apparently :(

I finished part 1 and so far it is amazing! It has a lot of references to the sino-japanese war, the opium problem china had as well as the opium war (poppy war, get the reference?), nianking massacre and more but adapted in a fantasy world. Having studied this part of history with a great professer during my masters I feel like I appreciate the story even more. Also all the references to the religion and shamanism I can relate to what I learned in my very hard and almost incomprehensible class on Confucianism. What the author made of all these true historical events and political tension is astonishingly beautiful. Add on top that the writing is impeccable and not only the protagonists but also so many of the side characters have substance and development and it is a 5 star read for me so far. I read in reviews that the second part will be much darker but I cannot wait to dive into it!
