What I've learned so far: early 19th c German-Jewish immigrants loved Christmas trees; they were more cultural than religious. The later 19th century Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe didn't feel this way. Hanukkah developed mid 20th century more for the kids as an alternative to Christmas.
