Number four, or John Smith, is going to school and is trying to stay on the downlow because he is a hero from a far away planet. The message from the book so far is to protect who you love. John made his family stay at home on their planet so they were safe. It is important because John would rather fight on his own and miss them then have them be vulnerable on Earth.
