This is probably a weak 4-stars for me. It is really ambitious to have two complete stories intertwined in one and give their "journeys" ample due. If you don't mind some fast-forward and glossing over from detail with a fast & furious neat ending (I assume...) then you will be quite happy with this book. I'd have preferred another 100 pages and a little more detail, including more drawn out action to the end.

Did you know? Related to the book, I am shocked to learn that the typical "prairie schooner" was 4 ft wide x 9-11 ft long x 2-3 ft deep. I can't imagine entire families going west with something this small to hold their few belongings and all the survival supplies they needed. Generally, women & children slept inside at night & men slept beneath. Today, someone would call it "fake news". Then, it was reality.

The way the story is written, it is like two books in one. Delightful!

A reviewer gave this book one star & said she didn't think the author had ever met a 9-year old. Well, some things might be a stretch of the imagination, but for the period of the book, kids didn't sit around playing games on the internet, especially street kids. Kids were wiser to the world & took on adulthood much earlier than today.

Almost all of the story up to this point is what I would call a backstory in detail. There was a prologue, but this should have been "prologue part deux". LOL Anxious to read what happens. This isn't a mystery. It is a suspense-romance.
