I was actually very surprised when Mathias had forced Brum unconscious. Brum has been his second father and mentor for the majority of his life, and although may have believed in some very harsh things, was the person that saved Mathias and gave him a relatively good life. I think it was the right choice, because he killed Brum in a very painless and efficient manner.
