The story is set in Maycomb County, an old beat up town in Alabama. The book talks about it being a not well taken care of town with grass growing on the sidewalks, the courthouse sagged in the square. The book also talks about people usually not leaving Maycomb when they are re there and there is nowhere to go, nothing to buy, and no money to buy anything with.
