Fascinating so far. Sets up a 3-part conflict: American Jews, affluent German Jewish immigrants, poor East European Jewish immigrants. This lays the ground work for the internal struggles over Christmas among American Jews in the early 20th century. Herzl had a Xmas tree; so did Schecther's family. Xmas pogroms in Belorussia & Ukraine make EE Jews literally afraid of Xmas.
