I've always known that myths contain a great deal of adult content. I was not still quite prepared for Plutarch's version of the birth of Romulus and Remus, which involves a wicked king finding a phallus in his hearth. A phallus about which there are prophecies.

I definitely like Greek myths better than Roman ones. Not entirely sure why, but I'm wondering if the Roman ones seem a bit more misogynistic or I don't like the morals being taught in some other way. Like, really Pygmalion, what moral does your story teach?

Disconcerting, yet understandable: The illustrations are from historical sources. For Ancient Greek myths, many of them are by medieval and Renaissance painters. It's slightly odd seeing Oedipus in distinctly 14th century attire, or a painting of Andromeda, from Aethiopa in Africa, nude - with pale skin and strawberry blonde hair. I'm really enjoying this. I grew up on D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths, but it's been a long time since I've comprehensively read through it. This is much more adult. The sexual content is not censored, and there is much foundation in research, with frequent references to original sources.
