Guegamp-Sans-Gavotten is definitely taking its cues from the expressionists. It's a charged drawing, full of energy. So far, it's my favorite of the Black Drawings.

"The Lover Practicing Hate" is one of the more intriguing Black Drawings: more dynamic than the others, graphically intriguing, even emotive, though the specific emotion being evoked is really up to the viewer.

I would love to observe The Brothers Quay while they were working. I am most curious about how much joking they do while working together. Sure, their movies are dark and melancholy, but I wonder how much of this is a manifestation of a dark sense of humor.

The analysis of the psychopathia sexualis vis-a-vis the drawing "Chateau de Labonnecuyere" is stretched too far by a mile or too and overly pretentious in tone. The rest of the analysis is sound, though. But this is why people mock academia, precisely because of this sort of thing.

Okay, now we get into the actual drawings. Not that the preamble was bad. I actually liked it quite a bit!

Motifs can come from weird places like trolley cars and soccer fields. I won't even pretend to understand.

This notion of the Quay's early posters being "film without film" has really taken hold on my brain. I suppose some of my own more esoteric fiction could be termed "story without story". I quite like writing this sort of thing. I must do more.

Fascinating. This is the sort of "deep history" of the Quays' career that I've been seeking for a long time. This is also going to add a bevy of books to my TBR list, I'm afraid.
