Joe Rantz and he is in his family’s garden that he tends for it and brings him joy. When his little brother comes out and starts stepping on his garden he does something to make he step-mother very mad. He is banished from the house and has to work on his own and work hard for food. This is significant because when he is rowing he has to learn to care for his teammates and because he learned how to love by himself.
