Oh, and I forgot. "What is it like to be a bat?" was referenced but the reference wasn't called out (not even by the Witness, surprisingly). Always pleased to see another person has read such a thing.

Shand's diction is less obnoxious now.

Saul Shand also sounds like a tool. I can't tell if the narrative wants me to think so, too.

Hmm. Are we to assume this alchemist is an arab?

Yeah, I'm liking this protagonist a lot better.

(And was that really only four pages? It feels like I'm covering more ground than I am. I wonder if that's an ebook thing or a 'this book' thing.)

I was going to say that I'm enjoying this protagonist - a middle-aged, almost Ursula Vernon-esque protagonist - a lot more, but she just responded to seeing her kidnapper by admiring how hot he is. If I hadn't had dipshit mcshark in the previous chapter, I might have interpreted it as her casual steel in the face of adversity.

Also, if you call a character 'Tubman', I immediately picture them as black, though Tubman's race isn't mentioned.
