Forrest added a status update
Why can I not do an update from the Currently Reading pane on my home page any more? Who thought this was a good idea, because BAD IDEA!!! Is there a way to file a formal complaint on this. Seriously, in.con.ven.ient.!!! Goodreads: are you trying to make it difficult to like you? Is this another 2016 in the making? Not a good look. Not at all.

Gavin I think Goodreads is doing some sort of planned maintenance but things have dragged on longer than anticipated. Hopefully they have the updates and the like back soon!

I'm hoping so, too! I hope the "plan" isn't to eliminate the update option on the front page . . .

Walter Schutjens yeah I also found this very annoying. Now I have to resort to the page of the book itself, and then be further confused.

[Name Redacted] It hadn't occurred to me that this might be deliberate -- I assumed it was another glitch, like back at the beginning of 2018 when for a couple weeks the challenge didn't register any books I had read between certain dates. :P

Yeah, me either. If it's deliberate, I'd love to know why they thought it was a good idea in the first place. Because>>>Bad Idea.

I've been happier with Goodreads decisions before . . . not happy about this one. Not user friendly at all.

James oh good, so it's not just me!

message 8: by Nocturnalux (new)

Nocturnalux I hope it's just a glitch because it's just annoying.

message 9: by Wastrel (new)

Wastrel Wouldn't put it past them to think this was a good idea. It's surprising how hellish some kinds of navigating around GR have become.

Oh, no. It's everyone. I'd suggest doing a status update on GR letting them know your displeasure. :)

Annoying and incredibly inefficient. They probably think it's redundant because business-people don't deal well with real life if it doesn't meet their return-on-investment expectations.

I get the feeling that their programmers don't actually use the site . . . Or they spend all day every day on it, so they think that users know what they know.

RuthAnn It is really inconvenient :(

Ohhhh, is that why some books are missing from my shelves?!

Fingers crossed this isn't an "improvement" -- I'll be sad if there is no more updating while reading.

You can still update, but the P.I.T.A. factor is high. You have to go click on the book in you Currently Reading section (upper left corner-ish), then scroll down to where your review is and click "update status". Then you can either append to the last status update you made or do what I do and nuke all that (the last status update is blow in "for" you automagically), then key in your update. I like to keep my updates separate because . . . reasons.

Obviously!
What kind of happy horse shit is this?

RuthAnn Did you see? They put it back!

Yay! Glad they saw fit to return/repair it!

Richard Derus Don't forget that you can always update progress on "Currently Reading" books via the book's page, in case this happens again. (And it's bound to.)

Yep, I'm aware of that. But the PITA factor is very high going that route.

Agreed. Very glad we're able to update on Home again.

That happens to me all the time, trippy update or not. I've tried contacting gr's customer's support and, to be fair, e-mails were exchanged back and forth but all the good intentions in the world couldn't change the fact that they had absolutely no idea.

What usually happens is the 'read' counter keeps changing. It goes back and forth, at times adding a book or two, usually subtracting. The actual list of books seems to remain unchanging and the yearly challenge is not affected but using the 'read' counter to actually know how many items the shelf has is a fool's errand.

Maybe I should try to contact them again, maybe they've figured what the problem is.
