Pete turned back to me, licked his lips. “I love you.”
“You do?”
He nodded just once. “Like crazy. You wanted me to see you. But, Adele, you’re all I see.”

My life was so full of wonder. Mostly wondering what the hell I was doing.

“There will be no violence,” scolded Shanti. “Andrew, be nice. Peter, don’t poke the bear when you just knocked up his daughter. That’s not wise. Now, how was the drive, darling?”

“Your daughter’s feelings are not nonsense,” said Shanti. “They’re both adults, Andrew. If they want to screw on the kitchen counter then that’s their business. Not ours.”

Some things were beyond being fixed, even by a dress with pockets.

I just watched him in silence, his muscles bunching and straining. The dedicated fury and focus on his face. He was beautiful, a work of art. Irate Man the Morning After Regrettably Incredibly Hot Sex, that’s what they’d call it, the painting or sculpture or whatever.

He smiled for a moment, either at the memory of it happening or the memory of me laughing at the story. Then his gaze darkened, and he stared into the gin and tonic. “I don’t talk to everyone like I do with you. Did. Like I did with you.”

We were apparently at war, and I couldn’t even blame him since it was all my fault. God, I hated the old familiar feeling of guilt. Life would be so much easier if I could hate him, push some of the blame his way. But the truth was, he hadn’t done a damn thing wrong. Not back then. Not even really now.
