Margo is missing. She has left clues for Quentin, and Quentin endeavors to trace her footsteps and find where she is. Quentin has come close to a strip mall that he suspects Margo to be sleeping in. To find Margo, Quentin even lies to his parents, saying that "[he] decided to go to prom" (164), while actually, he is sleeping in the strip mall to look for Margo. At 3 AM, the friends at prom call him to pick him up.

A major part of the beginning tells the escape of Margo and Quentin, and their small but bitter revenge on their enemies. They spray paint "M"s on other's houses, take a picture naked, and even shave one half of their eyebrow. With all these events, Quentin feels like he has gotten close to Margo, but Margo still shows no emotion towards him back. It is going to be interesting to see how their relationship develops.
