I cannot say enough about how engaging the book is both for the great "true crime" story but even more so for the historical content about China in the 30s: chaing kai-chek has moved the capital to Nanjing in response to challenges by northern warlords leaving loyal mayor behind; Jap. troops wait outside city - attack imminent and subsidize opium to weaken locals; Western quarter heavily guarded post-Boxer Revolution
