Ray Japhy and Morley are going on a mountain climbing trip. They first go drink at a bar before heading on the drive. They stop mid drive to get some rest. Ray gets frustrated because Morley forgot his sleeping bag so they have to share the sleeping bags as blankets.

The book had started off a bit slow for me. Nothing much was happening Ray was just traveling towards Santa Barbara on a gondola car. He encounters a man who he calls a Dharma Bum. However, i did like how we were jumping in time. It got more interesting because different events were being described. It got interesting when Japhy attacks Ray and his friends because it doesnt seem like something he would do.
