The Sword of Shannara is a light and lively read of the sword quest. While not exactly high fantasy (as opposed to George R.R. Martin or Steven Erikson's Malazan epic), I thought the first book was entertaining. And to anyone who says "Yeah, that hack ripped off "The Fellowship of the Ring," my reply is "Unless a court of competent jurisdiction determined a copyright infringement, the story stands as original."
