Mayme left and ended up falling asleep in a ditch from dehydration etc. Katie ended up hearing screaming the next morning which come to find out was a pregnant girl named Emma sitting in her barn, and having bad contractions because she was in labor. Katie quickly got onto a horse and went to find mayme when she did mayme was trying to sooth her and keep her comfortable like giving her blankets, pillows, and water.

Mayme was explaining to Katie how her life as a slave was, "hard and long" Katie was very confused why at first. Once mayme started to explain her life as a slave, Katie realized how hard her life really was.

Mayme was trying to explain to Katie about her dad being a slave owner without making her mad :(

Mayme had all her rags on the edge of her bed. Katie asked why she had such bad clothes and where she lived, Mayme said she lived in a cabin with 8 people until her papa died. so now 7 people, and Mayme started to wear Katies mothers clothes.

The lady that showed up just ended up being one of Katies mothers friends dropping off her mail. This friend would like Katie to come to town, but none of them knew she was dead.

Katie was teaching mayme how to read. As they were outside they seen someone coming, Mayme was very very scared because she's a colored woman on a white masters plantation. Who could it be?

Today is Katies bday and mayme was able to make her a cake and teach Katie a song that maryann and colored friends would sing. The song was really special to mayme and she taught it to Katie on her bday. Which was a big deal to mayme.

Mary Ann is still taking care of Katie. Katies birthday is today in the book and she was really sad and disappointed because her mother who is dead always made her a cake. Now the run-away slave "Mary Ann" is attempting to make her a cake.

Katie met this girl named maryann who was colored, but came to this white mans house to see what was going on. When she walked in there were bodies everywhere. Everyone was killed, except the masters daughter. Maryann found her and started taking care of her, feeding her, helping around the house, helping cows, etc. Another white man appeared at the house today. The colored woman (Mary Ann) was hiding.

Katies parents died obviously. She then started to walk just walk she didn't know where to go or where she was she just kept walking. Katie found a home similar to hers when she walked in there blood. people. dead. She seen a girl similar to her. They both lost there mother, and Katie started burying bodies and taking care of the girl who's name she did not know.
