In this section of the story, the author is telling the reader about Miles Manning's life. John Coy, the author, creates a sense of sadness when the main character’s football coach reveals to the team that he is battling cancer. This builds tension in the text because the coach that Miles does not get along with is now going to be in charge.

The character Miles Manning had a choose to do steroids in the text. If he decided to do it, he would be bigger, faster, stronger and better at football. However there are many drawbacks it has on your health. Miles chooses not to take the steroids. This affects him later in the story when he loses the starting spot on defense to a guy who is on steroids.

Also, the author conveys to the reader that the main character is learning about the slave trade in school. On top of that, the author continues to tell the reader that Miles needs to find a homecoming date very soon. The author also establishes conflict between himself and his friend when his friend, Zach, always pressures him into trying steroids.
