Fascinating, timely ...but... slow reading! Reads like a PhD dissertation that was not (at first?) intended for mass market. The result feels like a textbook slog without benefit of teacher guidance or class discussion.
Had hoped this book would be accessible and compellingly written non-fiction on this hugely important topic. Will keep going despite author’s writing nevertheless.

Fascinating but am stumblng a bit because the author does not tell us, the reader, the modern names of the locations/places he writes about. Therefore its confusing to me where he is in his story. I guess he assumes the reader knows the ancient historical names of places and locations through-out Europe.
