Philosophically speaking this is the I/world dualism that is so familiar to adults and has been since puberty. We therefore tend to make the mistake of assuming that it is the same for young children. But for them this question is a totally new and constitutes a crusis that will fundamentally change thw young child's self-image and relationship to others.
