It's better now, but the opening felt all over the place.
That's not as bad as it sounds as the first chapter is unfocused but very humorous. Eg hastings' still relevant observations whilst reading the paper
-The political situation seemed unsatisfactory but uninteresting, there was trouble in China, there was a long account of a city swindle, but on the whole there was no news of a very thrilling order.

I read a lot, and it’s easy to think oh this was fine 3 stars with many contemporary books that actually aren’t really fine and will be forgotten in a second. And then you pick a book from 1923 up again, and are magically transported. The storytelling is sparkling. Sure words and some ideas maybe outdated but the storytelling… that can’t be beat
