I am finding Newman rather impossible -- purposefully without wrinkles (save those he claims to have despite all evidence), restrained, antiseptic. I am not only unconvinced but peeved -- I shelved Flaubert for this. At least those around him, notably Mrs. Tristram, aren't buying it either, so perhaps I'm in the right company.
