This book is riveting. Rushdie makes a good case for his being an icon of post-post-modern modernity. His experience foreshadows the events of 9/11 and those that follow. R is at his best when he's bringing together many disparate elements to show how they fit into a complicated totality - he did it with India in MC. He does something similar here. Bonus: there's some romance, deception, spy stuff, and Bono.

Why I love Rushdie: "literature [tries] to open the universe, to increase, even if only slightly, the sum total of what it is possible for human being to perceive, understand, and so, finally, to be."
