The war continues but a decisive battle for the Germans is thwarted by the Allied forces and in particular, by Joffre. The French attack the exposed flank of the Germans causing a retreat.

French Government officials evacuate Paris and move to Bordeaux. French army continues the controlled retreat. German plans to attack past Pairs uncovered and French leaders adjust their tactics. Everyone is exhausted and some soldiers are executed for desertion. Klunk shifts pursuit of British in September. Al armies move south and east of Paris.

BEF leaders want to let the French fight their own war until leaders from both sides persuade differently. The French gain some ground in the battles but continue to fall back in an organized manor.

France and British forces suffer great losses. Paris government decides to hold down the front and protect the city. New Generals are assigned troops and everyone looks for a scapegoat. Germany moves two Corps to the East to ward off Russian forces. This war will not end soon.

Paris begins its defense.

Germany sees the double envelopment as a viable option.

Germans pound the French and British Expeditionary Forces (BEF). Total casualties for the BEF’s first five days in action equal 15,000.

French armies make a controlled retreat in an attempt to slow the German armies from taking over Paris.
