Jilseponie is hopeless, unmotivated, and weary in spirit. This is seen after her beloved husband Elbryan's death, as she struggles with losing yet another she loved. These are displayed in her journal entry stating that Elbyran's sacrifice was for nothing because human kind is the true chaos and evil that will never change, and it is shown in her inability to see hope in situations or get out of bed in the mornings.

A connection I made between my book and the world is the racism seen between two groups of people. Similar to how people of different color and religion are treated by others, the Alpinadorans were treated poorly by the Abellican monks only because they believed in a different religion than the Abellicans. Even though the Alpinadoran people fought to save the Abellican monks, they didn't go to them with healers.

Continuing the theme that pride leads to problems from book three, the theme is seen once more in this book in both Crown and Church. Both of these two political powers believe that they should be in control of power, so they focus on increasing their hold on the power in the kingdom, but their real focus should be on reuniting the people and in bringing everyone back together after the war ravaged the land.
