This time around, I can't help but wonder if the whole idea of this book is a little condescending or exploitative. Do we really need a book to tell us that being poor sucks? This reads almost like a travelogue of poverty, encouraging almost voyeurism in the reader. Maybe that's just the difference between 2013 and 2001, when this was first written.
