The tone of this book so far I believe is negative. It has a sympathizer tone because for each person and their hardships are portrayed in a sad way. It also has a hopeless tone. Such as Ness who has all her loved ones killed and taken away, and many failed escapes. And also Esi who was trapped in compact spaces and terrible conditions for most of her life, and her daughter also taken away.

I would ask Ethe how she burned her children. In her sleep how did she, start a fire? It seems close to impossible. Another question I have is why she didn’t try to go to her son sonner. She sent letters, but, that was not nearly enough to persuade her son to come. One last question is how she lived with the guilt of destroying her family. It would be a struggle to keep going after such a tragedy.

An important event is when slavery ended. Though this by no means will end their suffering, it signified the start of freedom. Another event for the current character, H, is when he takes his partners and his own load of coal, saving his life. A turning point is when he decides to reconnect with people and contact his old lover, Ethe. The conflict is declining because people are gaining more freedom.
