I've been in a bit of a reading slump. I only read six books in April, which may seem a lot but they're comic books and I usually get through two or three a week. So I'm back to Nightwing. In addition to his unfortunate red costume, I hate his New 52 haircut. I can't remember if the moptop was a thing in 2011, but probably – Justin Bieber and all.

Apparently Gotham has a historical prostitution district. Who knew?
Anyways, a personal connection I have with Nightwing is that he practices the Filipino martial art of escrima, which I dabbled in as a youth. This story in fact centers on his weapons, which I appreciate are always called escrima sticks. Though mine never shot electricity.

Being a Scott Snyder protégé, it's unsurprising Higgins would go the historical route in giving meat to narrative through intercut flashbacks – Snyder has a penchant for painting Gotham in sepia tones. What is surprising is how directly he references their pre-reboot collaboration Gates of Gotham. So much for the New 52 being a clean slate.
